Shetland Sheepdog...

Shetland Sheepdogs, Shelties for short, are a small herding breed from the Shetland Islands. Like most herding breeds they are fast in both body and mind. Shelties are easy to train and eager to please which makes them ideal for obedience, agility and other performance events. The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog with a delightful temperament. It is gentle, sensitive, loyal, dainty, very lively, intelligent and trainable. This active, graceful dog needs lots of exercise.

The Shetland Sheepdog has a soft, smooth double coat of medium length. Regular brushing and combing several times a week is essential to removing hair shed. The haircoat is dense and so easily matted that when it is not cared for a period of time, it can become so matted a groomer has no choice but to remove the coat. Use both slicker and pin brushes, along with metal combs both wide and medium for matted dogs. Extra care is usually required during the shedding season as they tend to be seasonally heavy shedders. Baths or dry shampoos should be given only when needed.
