Dandie Dinmont Terrier...

This breed originated somewhere in the border area between England and Scotland, and is believed to be a descendant of the now-extinct Scotch Terrier and the Skye Terrier. This short legged terrier was developed in the 17th Century as an otter and badger specialist in the Cheviot and Teviotdale Hills. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier belongs to the Terrier group and were originally used to hunt otters, weasels and badgers and small ground vermin, but are now used as family pets and seen in the show-ring. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is lively, plucky, determined, willful, affectionate and fun-loving. Bold yet dignified. Reserved with strangers and protective of family and home.

Dandi Dinmont Terriers have a coat mix of both soft and not so soft haircoat. The mix of two hair types is termed "penciled." Since this coat type is easily distinguishable to this breed in particular; it is important for the shown dog to be groomed professionally by an experienced handler/groomer well familiar with the breed. Show groomed pets have the body coat mostly or entirely plucked whereas some owners not showing pets prefer the pet is trimmed. Though they shed little to no hair, they nonetheless require daily brushing to prevent tangles. Professional grooming is also recommended for this breed, and plucking is usually required once or twice a year to remove dead hairs.
