Chow Chow...

The Chow Chow is a member of the spitz family and has been native to China for more than 2000 years. They are a masterpiece of beauty and dignity, unique in their blue-black tongue, a common trait in Asiatic bears that lived near the development of the Chow. Chow Chows are medium-sized, very stocky, and furry, looking somewhat like a small rounded bear. It stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident, dignified stature. It makes a formidable watchdog and is naturally clean and easy to housebreak. The Chow Chow is quiet and mannerly in the home and only needs moderate exercise. Chows carry a reputation of being aggressive, but this is slightly undeserved, for they are a tenacious fighter only if provoked.

Chow Chows don't require extensive trimming but do need a few hours of brushing, bathing and nailcutting to maintain their magnificent appearance. Regular brushing and combing several times a week is essential in order to remove substantial wooly hair shed from the dense undercoat, and not only the outer coarse guard coat which protects the undercoat. This dog will shed heavily with the seasons, and extra grooming is usually required during that time. When needed, dry shampoo.
