Border Collie...

The Border Collie originated in Northumberland on the Scottish/English border. The breed descended from old British droving breeds with some spaniel added. The Border Collie belongs to the pastoral group and is the classic farm dog. They are excellent working dogs and are second to none when it comes to sheep-herding and obedience competitions. They are often used in mountain rescues, as sniffer dogs and for tracking. The Border Collie temperament is well suited to life in the suburbs as long as there's plenty of work to do. Its a good watchdog, affectionate to his family and their friends, and quite intelligent. They are very active indoors and do best with acreage.

Border Collies have soft, dense double coats. The outer coat is medium to long and textured flat to perhaps a little wavy. Feathering often adorns the front legs and chest. The Border Collie needs regular combing and brushing to keep the coat gleaming. Check the ears and coat regularly for ticks. Though this dog is an average shedder, additional grooming is needed seasonally when it loses its dense undercoat. The Border Collie should be given a bath or dry shampoo only when needed.
